年过半百的航运船长林权海（王学圻 饰）在14年后重返重庆家中，他一心忙于事业，以致接连遭遇两次失败的婚姻，而在他外出期间，25岁的儿子林波（子义 饰）也因在超市抢劫、伤人被警方当场击毙。对林权海来说，这个阔别已久的城市有着太多太多让他难以理解的变化。在此之后，他接连拜访前妻李育英（丁嘉丽 饰）、朋友老金（王奎荣 饰）、老金的儿子昊子（秦昊 饰）、女店员玲子、被劫持的人质竹青（范冰冰 饰）、林波的女友小雯（李菲儿 饰）以及击毙林波的刑警刘成（张嘉译 饰），只为看清儿子真正的面目和内心，以及十数年落转所失落的情感碎片…… 　　本片取材自发生在重庆的一起真实事件。

　　上海市郊某小镇，天未亮，秀秀正在磨豆腐。忽然，外头传来几声枪响，一个受了伤的男人潜入店内。善良的秀秀救了叫石海生的男人，从此海生记住了这个女人。                                                                    　　“高记洋行”小开高启文被枪杀未遂、成了植物人的消息震惊商界。高父震怒，发誓务必抓到凶手。殊不知买凶杀人的就是女儿晓红的未婚夫刘家齐。家齐乃洋行职员，贪图富贵，虽已娶妻秀秀，谎称单身，被启文识破，以致招来杀身之祸。                                                                    　　家齐怕秀秀坏了他的好事，不惜诈死，被海生识破，进而发现家齐就是秀秀的丈夫。为了报恩，海生不惜背叛黑帮，几次三番出手相助的同时，默默爱上了秀秀。                                                                    　　家齐一不作、二不休，诬陷海生入狱，并将秀秀推入江中。秀秀命大，被高家商场宿敌康铁祥刚救起，在康铁祥的协助下，家齐现出原形，遭到惩罚。秀秀、海生展开新的人生。

该片又名《亚当复活》，根据1969年以色列著名畅销小说家尤拉里·卡纽克(Yoram Kaniuk)的作品改编，讲述了德裔以色列小丑演员亚当·斯坦的故事，他被迫在纳粹集中营内为在押犯们表演取乐，最后得以逃过生死劫只是因为能够为进入毒气室的囚犯们拉拉小提琴曲。杰夫·古德布鲁姆(Jeff Goldblum)在片中饰演亚当，威廉·达福则出演集中营指挥官，此人将亚当象条狗一样尽尽羞辱之能事。
